Some say no to open floor concepts

Open floor plans are so popular these days that it’s a bit startling to meet people who want walls and distinct areas.

But they have good reasons to say no to open floor plans.

An open concept that extends from the living room to the kitchen puts extra stress on the host to have a spic-and-span, stylish kitchen. Will your open concept require an upgraded refrigerator, stove, island and other items?

The open concept is great for people who want to socialize with their guests, but sometimes a cook wants to work his or her culinary magic in private. Especially if the kitchen is crowded with dirty dishes and pans.

We know another couple who cancelled their open concept remodelling when both began to work from home. They decided they preferred the privacy of doors and separate rooms. (He’s a loud talker.)

With the open concept you may get the noise of a television in one area competing with the conversation of people as they head for the kitchen.

In addition, the open concept may require the removal of walls. That’s OK if it’s a mere wall, but a load-bearing wall is expensive to remove. An engineer must be hired; beams may be needed to provide support if the wall is removed.

Give me open space

If these considerations don’t apply to you, then an open concept look will transform your home and improve the quality of your life.

Your home will look larger and more inviting as visitors enter. They will see an uninterrupted flow and you will have multiple opportunities to decorate your home.

The open concept maximizes your square footage, especially if you can incorporate an odd nook or underused area into the main flooring. (Some people complain that an open concept will make their area look too big, but they don’t live in New York City apartments or Long Island ranches.)

The open concept is a blessing for parents of small children. They can prepare meals while keeping an eye on the kids.

And the open concept lets the cook socialize with the guests while preparing a meal. Many gatherings gravitate to the kitchen anyway, so let’s make it easy for guests to find their way.

A compromise?

Or, you can have the best of both concepts and mold them to your family’s desires.

A modified open concept offers an open floor plan while also creating more privacy and definition to the area. Partial walls, cabinets, or different lighting and floor treatments will create specific niches in your open floor plan.

Sometimes it’s as simple as rearranging the furniture to establish boundaries. Built-in shelves, sliding doors and different ceiling treatments are other methods to shape the open concept to your taste.

Your decision

If you’re unsure, ask yourself how these various concepts will work for you and your family. Do you entertain often? Do family members prefer quiet? Or do you and your family and friends enjoy frequent social gatherings?

Put together a checklist of likes and dislikes, then tally the results and make the decision best for your family and budget.
